Our vision is that all young people with physical disabilities have equal opportunity to participate in sport & recreation
Our purpose is bringing about moments of joy.
Established in 1963 by Olympic Legend, Sir Murray Halberg ONZ, MBE, the Halberg Foundation is a New Zealand charitable organisation driven by a profound belief: that every individual, regardless of their ability, should enjoy equal opportunities to enrich their lives through sports and recreation. For six decades, we have passionately dedicated ourselves to transforming Sir Murray’s vision into a living reality for physically disabled young people in New Zealand.
Our work in a nutshell:
Halberg Club is the heart of Halberg. It is an imagined haven where young individuals with physical disabilities and their whanau find themselves at the centre of a vibrant and supporting community.
Our committed Halberg Advisors, strategically positioned across New Zealand, serve as mentors, offering guidance and information for you, your family, teachers, and sports facilitators about how Halberg can support your athletic endeavours. Halberg Club hosts a realm of opportunities including the Activity Fund that can help remove financial obstacles to participating in sport and recreational activities you love, through lessons, equipment, or even assistance during school camps.
The Youth Council, comprised of passionate and forward-thinking leaders, champions inclusivity who strives to eliminate barriers and advocate for equality in sports and recreation for all. The Youth Council support their local Advisors at events and programmes and invited to speak on behalf our community with
Halberg Train: Join us in championing inclusivity and transforming lives through the power of sport. Together, we’re opening doors to a world of opportunities for all, but providing educators, coaches and activity providers nationwide with the tools to make sports and recreation truly inclusive.
Halberg Games: a prestigious three-day national sporting festival designed exclusively for physically disabled and visually impaired young people between the ages of eight and 21. This exceptional event offers participants the opportunity to compete against peers with similar impairments and pursue their sports-related dreams.
ISPS Handa Halberg Awards: Anchoring our efforts is the prestigious ISPS Handa Halberg Awards, the pinnacle of New Zealand’s sports recognition landscape. This annual event is a celebration of sporting excellence, honouring the remarkable achievements of our country’s elite athletes on the world stage.
None of this would be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, partners, and funders. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to every individual and organisation that stands with us on this incredible journey. On behalf of Sir Murray Halberg ONZ, MBE, we thank you for your unwavering support. Together, we continue to create moments of joy by transforming lives and making sport and recreation in New Zealand truly inclusive for all.
