Meet Zack Lappin, one of the newest members of the Halberg Youth Council, whose passion for para sport, community, and servant leadership is already making an impact.

Based in the rural community of Fernside in North Canterbury, Zack lives between Rangiora and Oxford, around 45 minutes northwest of Christchurch. A dedicated athlete, he competes in athletics, specialising in discus and javelin. When he’s not training or studying, you’ll likely find him supporting the Crusaders or spending time on his family’s lifestyle block. Asked to describe himself in three words, Zack says: driven, compassionate, and community-minded—a fitting summary of both his outlook and actions.

Zack’s decision to apply for the Halberg Youth Council was grounded in a strong belief that every young person deserves the chance to fully participate in sport and active recreation. “I wanted to contribute to creating more inclusive, accessible opportunities for children and young people,” he explains, “and help shape a future where participation truly feels possible for everyone.”

Joining the Council holds deep personal meaning for Zack, who sees it as a way to give back to an organisation that has supported him throughout his sporting journey. He describes it as an honour to contribute to the legacy envisioned by Sir Murray Halberg, and a responsibility he takes seriously. What has stood out most since joining is the Council’s commitment to servant leadership—where members lead through action, service, and collaboration alongside their regional advisors.

Looking ahead to 2026, Zack is excited by the opportunity to grow while giving back to the communities that have shaped him. His goals for the year are ambitious and balanced: qualifying for the Oceania Championships in Darwin, and continuing progress toward completing his university studies. He’s also keen to keep developing as a leader, currently challenging himself by reading more on leadership, including Loyal by Todd Blackadder and Phil Gifford.

Through the Youth Council, Zack is particularly passionate about contributing to meaningful conversations around para sport at both community and governance levels, ensuring equitable access for future generations. Having grown up rurally, he is a strong advocate for improving para sport opportunities outside major centres, where access can often be limited.

Zack hopes his voice will help challenge outdated stigmas in sport and replace them with messages of inclusion, possibility, and belonging. “My goal is to help create an environment where everyone is supported to grow, participate, and feel truly valued,” he says.

He believes youth voice is vital to organisations like Halberg, ensuring they remain responsive to the evolving needs of rangatahi across Aotearoa. His message to other young people considering getting involved is simple but powerful: Halberg is a place to learn, grow, and connect. “Halberg events are where you’ll make lifelong friends, no matter where you’re from or where life takes you.”
