The Tu Meke Te Awamutu Adapted Play Festivals were a resounding success, bringing together students from across the Waikato for two unforgettable days of fun, connection, and inclusive play. Held on Tuesday, 12 November, and Tuesday, 19 November, at the Te Awamutu Sports Club, the festivals provided a unique opportunity for students of all abilities to engage in sport and play activities tailored to their needs.

The atmosphere at the events was nothing short of inspiring, with countless moments of joy and enthusiasm lighting up the day. Students threw themselves into the activities with excitement, supported by the unwavering encouragement of their teachers, staff, and attending parents. It was heartwarming to see such a high level of engagement, showcasing the power of inclusive play in creating a sense of belonging and achievement.

The final session of the festival was made even more special with the presence of the Rapid Relief team, who added their energy and support to the day’s events. Their involvement provided a memorable finish to the festival, leaving everyone with smiles and a sense of fulfilment.

None of this would have been possible without the incredible partnership between Halberg and the Te Awamutu Rugby Sport and Recreation Club. Their combined efforts ensured the smooth running of the events and provided a welcoming environment for all participants. A massive thank you also goes out to the amazing provider partners whose dedication and enthusiasm brought the activities to life. Their time and efforts gave students a rare opportunity to represent their schools in sports, many of them for the very first time.

A special shoutout to Te Awamutu Sports Lacrosse, WaiBop Football, Hamilton City Netball Centre, Special Olympics Waikato, Parafed Waikato, Ride Your Trike, and Waikato Disc Golf for delivering activities that were inclusive, engaging, and tailored to the diverse needs to every student. Their contribution ensured that every participant could take part in a way that suited them, creating a safe and supportive space for exploration and fun.

The Tu Meke Te Awamutu Adapted Play Festivals are a testament to the impact of inclusive sport and play, breaking down barriers and providing meaningful opportunities for students to shine. We look forward to seeing more of these events in the future and continuing to create joyful, empowering experiences for all.
