Here are 10 standout moments from the weekend that captured the true spirit of the Halberg Games.

SIONANN’S HEARTFELT OPENING CEREMONY SPEECH

One of the most memorable moments of the weekend came during the Opening Ceremony, when Halberg Youth Council member Sionann Murphy took to the stage to deliver a truly heartfelt speech.

Having competed at the Halberg Games for more than 10 years, this year marked Sionann’s final Games as an athlete — making her words even more meaningful. Her speech reflected on the impact the Games have had on her journey, her love for sport, and the incredible sense of community that surrounds this event.

For many athletes in attendance, Sionann is someone to look up to — an inspiring role model whose passion, leadership, and connection to the Halberg whānau shone through every word.

TEAM MANAWATŪ RALLYING BEHIND SAMUEL

A beautiful display of team spirit unfolded during the 50m wheelchair race as Team Manawatū came together to support Samuel.

With cheers ringing out from the sidelines, Samuel’s supporters encouraged him every metre of the way. One of the most touching moments came when his cheer squad huddled around him, lifting his confidence and backing him through the race.

Thanks to the amazing encouragement of his team, Samuel was able to finish the race on his own terms — a powerful moment that perfectly embodied what the Games are all about.

EMMETT STEPPING UP WITH THE SENIORS

Emmett showed incredible determination and maturity when he stepped up to compete with the senior athletes, despite being a junior.

By taking on the challenge, he helped ease pressure on the senior group while also pushing himself outside of his comfort zone. More importantly, he rose to the occasion, competing strongly and proving to himself what he was capable of.

It was an awesome example of an athlete setting goals, backing themselves, and achieving them.

CHARLIE HALL’S TRIATHLON COMEBACK

Charlie delivered one of the most inspiring moments of the weekend during the triathlon.

After experiencing difficulties with her bike at the start of the event, it would have been easy to feel defeated. Instead, Charlie showed incredible resilience. She quickly got herself a new bike, regrouped, and got straight back into the race.

Her determination to keep going and finish strongly was a brilliant reminder that setbacks don’t define the outcome — it’s how you respond to them that matters.

JACK DIXON FINDING HIS INNER WARRIOR

Jack Dixon’s 50m event was a standout moment of personal courage and growth.

Despite feeling nervous before the race, Jack overcame his fear and found the confidence to step up and compete. As the race unfolded, it was amazing to watch his confidence grow in real time.

By the end, Jack had truly channelled his inner warrior, and the pride on his face said it all.

SALLY BARKMAN’S UNMATCHED TEAM SPIRIT

Every Halberg Games needs cheerleaders, and this year that honour once again belongs to Sally Barkman.

Sally brings unmatched energy, enthusiasm, and heart to every Games. From face paint and pep talks to cheering on athletes from the sidelines, she never misses an opportunity to lift the spirits of those around her.

Her positivity is contagious, and her presence continues to make the Games an even more special experience for everyone involved.

RORIE POFF SHOWING LEADERSHIP IN THE FIELD

Halberg Youth Council member Rorie Poff delivered a beautiful moment of leadership and kindness during the shot put event.

Noticing that a Team Waikato athlete was feeling unsure about how to hold and throw the shot put, Rorie stepped in to offer guidance and support.

Taking the time to explain the technique and help build the athlete’s confidence was a wonderful example of leadership in action — and exactly the kind of moment that makes the Halberg Games so special.

JOY THE KEA’S EPIC REVEAL

The Opening Ceremony had everyone buzzing when Halberg’s secret guest was finally revealed — Joy the Kea.

Bursting onto the scene with incredible dance moves, playful energy, and plenty of personality, Joy made an unforgettable entrance that instantly lit up the room.

Across the entire weekend, Joy brought smiles everywhere they went, handing out high fives, hugs, and endless moments of fun for athletes and supporters alike.

TIANA GRAY RECIEVING THE SIR MURRAY HALBERG CUP

One of the most emotional moments of the weekend came when Tiana Gray was announced as the recipient of the Sir Murray Halberg Cup.

This prestigious award recognises excellence across multiple sporting codes, leadership, teamwork, and contribution to team spirit — all qualities Tiana displayed throughout the Games.

Having attended the Games for four years, this recognition was incredibly special. The emotion shared between Tiana and her family, complete with happy tears and huge smiles, made it a moment no one will forget.

LIV FOUNTAIN’S SENIOR ATHLETIC FINISH

Liv Fountain’s senior athletics race was made unforgettable by the incredible support surrounding her.

As she powered through the race, the encouragement from the Halberg Youth Council and the wider Games community lifted the atmosphere around the track.
