This year’s annual Whānau Sports Day proved once again that community, connection, and movement can thrive no matter the weather. Held indoors to escape the heavy rain, the event was bursting with energy, laughter, and a true sense of whānau as families came together for a full day of inclusive, fun-filled activities.

The spirit of the day was all about togetherness — whānau playing side by side, trying new activities, supporting each other, and sharing plenty of laughs along the way. The sound of rain pelting the roof was no match for the cheers, shouts, and squeals of joy coming from inside the venue.

Participants of all ages and abilities jumped straight into the action with Walking Football, where plenty of goals were scored and friendly rivalries emerged. Sibling vs. sibling, father vs. son, friend vs. friend — everyone gave it their all in good spirits. There were ooohs and ahhhs as shots flew just wide, clipped the post, or curled perfectly into the net. It was a fantastic way to get warmed up and set the tone for the rest of the day.

Then it was time to ramp things up with a high-energy CrossFit circuit. The room was buzzing as ropes were whipped, kettlebells swung, medicine balls slammed, and shuttle runs smashed out with determination and encouragement from every corner. The circuit was a great opportunity for families to challenge themselves, cheer each other on, and discover just how strong and capable they are together.

After a quick water break, it was time for Wheelchair Rugby — a firm favourite! The session started with skills and drills: getting the hang of manoeuvring the chairs, passing and catching the ball, and learning to block and move as a team. The fun really kicked off when the games began. Players dashed through the gaps, zig-zagging their way to the try line with huge grins and the crowd behind them. It was incredible to see the cooperation and strategy as players created space and chances for their teammates — a powerful reminder of the value of teamwork and communication.

To close the day, participants gathered for a calming and adaptive yoga session. After all the action, this was the perfect way to wind down. Everyone had the chance to stretch, breathe deeply, and reflect on an inspiring day spent moving, laughing, and connecting. The peaceful energy in the room was a beautiful contrast to the earlier excitement — a reminder that wellness comes in many forms.

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who made the day such a success. A massive thank you to our amazing facilitators and partners — Molly and Guy, Jeremy, Rob, Darrell & Brenda, and Kerri. Your time, passion, and support were felt throughout the entire event, and we simply couldn’t have done it without you.

Whānau Sports Day isn’t just about sport — it’s about creating memories, building confidence, and strengthening community through the power of inclusive play. We can’t wait to do it all again next year!
