A HALBERG HERO IN THE MAKING

My name is Cooper Finnerty, and I am 10 years old – though I’m about to turn 11 soon! I go to Makarewa School in Southland. Last term, we had an exciting project where each of us chose our own personal hero. My classmates picked like their parents, famous sports players, and even politicians. But for me, the choice was clear. My hero is Sir Murray Halberg ONZ MBE.

Why Sir Murray? Well, he has done so much for people like me in the disabled community. I have Cerebral Palsy, and I’ve been lucky enough to attend the Halberg Games four times already – twice in Auckland and twice in Christchurch. Honestly, before I went, I wasn’t really into sports. But my physiotherapist recommended that I give the Halberg Games a try, and now, I can’t get enough of it! I’ve tried out cycling, archery, athletics, and even spend time in the hospital gym building my strength. The Games helped me find what I love, and now I’m always working to get stronger!

For my project, I created a poster and even recorded a podcast all about Sir Murray and why he’s my hero. I decided on a podcast because, to be honest, I find writing pretty tough (and let’s just say I’m a little lazy when it comes to that!). If you’d like you can listen to my podcast by clicking the link below.

Thank you, Sir Murray, for inspiring me and so many others!
