Last Wednesday in Auckland, Halberg Regional Advisor Joseph teamed up with fellow Advisor Rachael to deliver a special Inclusion Training for a passionate group of young players from The Football Girls Academy at Ellerslie Football Ground. The training was part of the Academy’s school holidays programme, which brings together girls aged 6 to 15 for a week of fun, skill-building, and football development. With a strong commitment to building an inclusive culture in sport, Head Coach Hayley reached out to Halberg to facilitate a session focused on disability awareness and inclusive practices – aligning perfectly with the Academy’s values of empowerment, growth, and community.
The session began with a quick theory segment where the girls learned about the work of the Halberg Foundation – supporting young people with physical disabilities to be active – and explored ways they could be more inclusive in their daily loves. This included learning how to adapt activities, communicate respectfully, and create welcoming environments for everyone, regardless of ability.
Despite the wet weather, spirits remained high as Rachael and Joseph took the group outside for a practical and fun inclusion session. Using modified football games and teamwork challenges, the Advisors showed the group how simple changes can make a big impact – ensuring everyone can be involved and have fun.

The Football Girls Academy, found to offer a professional and empowering environment for young female players, was the perfect setting for this meaningful learning opportunity. The Academy is dedicated to developing players not just on the field, but also as confident and compassionate individuals.
An important part of the training was helping the girls understand that by being more inclusive, they’re opening the doors for more people to get involved – not only with the sport itself but also with the Academy’s programmes. Whether someone has a disability or faces other barriers to participation, small changes and thoughtful attitudes can make football more accessible and welcoming to all.
“The girls were so engaged and eager to learn. It’s clear this is a team that cares deeply about being inclusive and lifting each other up – on and off the pitch.” – Rachael.
Halberg is excited about continuing this relationship with The Football Girls Academy, and we’re thrilled to see such positive feedback from the participants. By holding these connections early, we can help shape a generation of players who understand the importance of inclusion, and who will carry that value into all areas of their lives – from sport, to school, to friendships.
