Last week, the Halberg Recreation Camp brought together an inspiring group of young people for a week of adventure, growth, and connection on the beautiful Banks Peninsula. As the year draws to a close, we’re taking a moment to reflect on this incredible experience through the eyes of Regional Advisor Zoe. Her heartfelt account captures the spirit of the Camp, the resilience of the participants, and the many unforgettable moments that made the week so special. Here is Zoe’s recap:
Way to end the year on a high! Feeling more grateful than even to be able to work with such amazing young people in a very beautiful and adventure filled place.
Last week we were joined by 9 campers between the ages of 17 and 21 at our annual rec camp on Banks Peninsula. Every single participant surprised me throughout the week with their bravery, kindness and massive growth in confidence. At times I was feeling slightly redundant as everyone went the extra mile to support each other through whatever challenges they were facing, even as early as on the first day. I was again surprised when the time came for the camp out. More than half the participants took up this opportunity, with some continuing to sleep in tents for the remaining nights. Can we take a moment to point out that this was no glamping set up. The tents were more like gazebos, with no attached floor and an open initiation to bugs and other creatures to join them. The campers were absolute troopers.

One of my favourite parts of the camp was getting to start the day with an early morning walk and swim at the beach. On the first morning I was not expecting to be joined by anyone, but more than half the campers showed up ready to get into the day, which set the tone for the rest of the week. Another highlight was getting to watch so many amazing young people trying adventure-based activities for the first time, like kayaking and sailing. There’s was nothing that was going to stop these young people from getting involved. The cherry on top though, was the giant swing on the last day. I think I screamed as much as the participants while watching from afar. There was a lot of anticipation as we waited for the campers faces to change from shock to bliss after the initial drop.
Very stoked to be able to work in such an awesome team who helped bring this camp to life. Looking forward to seeing what these incredible young people go on to do in the future. I know that this camp has ignited a passion for the outdoors in many of the participants and I think we might have a few keen interns on next year’s camp. Thanks so much for having us Wainui Kind Foundation. Bring on rec camp 2025!
