Categories & Criteria

The following awards are presented at the ISPS Handa Halberg Awards

  • Supreme Halberg Award
  • ISPS Handa Sportsman of the Year (eligible for the Supreme Halberg Award)
  • 2degrees Sportswoman of the Year (eligible for the Supreme Halberg Award)
  • ISPS Handa Para Athlete/Team of the Year (eligible for the Supreme Halberg Award)
  • ISPS Handa Team of the Year  (eligible for the Supreme Halberg Award)
  • Buddle Findlay Coach of the Year
  • Sky Sport Emerging Talent
  • New Zealand’s Favourite Sporting Moment of the Year 
  • Sport New Zealand Leadership Award
  • Sir Murray Halberg Legacy Award in partnership with CityFitness

Nominations Eligibility is set by an independent process agreed by the Halberg Awards Nominations Board.

Our independent nominations Board consists of Maria Clarke, Adrian Blincoe and Conrad Smith.

The Nominations Eligibility Criteria for the ISPS Handa Halberg Awards can be viewed here.

Awards winners are chosen by independent juries made up of former athletes, coaches, sports professionals and sports journalists and media.

Our Voting Academy is comprised of 30 members. They select the winners of the Halberg Supreme Award and the Sportsman, Sportswoman, Team and Para Athlete / Para Team and Coach of the Year Awards.

Our Emerging Talent Award has a separate jury consisting of 8 members.

Our Sporting Moment Award has a panel of sports media professionals who shortlist a top 10 from the nominations received for a public vote. Voting for this Award will open in January 2025.

The recipient of the Leadership Award is chosen by Sport New Zealand.
