Sunday afternoon, Halberg partnered with Disability Sport Auckland to host an unforgettable Ice Skating Session – and what an epic afternoon it turned out to be! From the moment the first skates hit the ice, the rink was filled with excitement, courage, and plenty of laughter.

The event was open to anyone keen to give skating a go, and the response was incredible. Families, friends, and individuals of all abilities came together to enjoy the experience, wrapping up warm again the chilly ‘indoor icy weather’ and embracing the challenge of the rink. For many, it was their very first time ice skating – and the determination and joy on everyone’s faces said it all.
“Thank you all for such a fun afternoon! It was so great to see so many happy faces around the ice rink. Loved the opportunity, my son absolutely loved his first go at ice skating” – Participants Parent

A standout highlight of the session was seeing wheelchair users join in on the fun with full access to the ice. The rink came alive with wheelies, drifts, and plenty of creative moves that showed just how inclusive sport and recreation can be when the right opportunities are provided. The cheers and encouragement from those on and off the ice created an incredible buzz and a real sense of community.
The turn out for the afternoon was massive, with the rink overflowing with energy from start to finish. Everywhere you looked, there were smiles, laughter, and moments of joy – the kind of memories that stick with you long after the skates come off. For some, it was about conquering nerves and stepping out of their comfort zone, while for others it was about having a blast with friends and whānau, but for everyone it was about connection and fun.

“Thank you for the fun event. Our daughter was so proud of herself that she didn’t give up” – Participants Parent
Events like these are at the heart of what Halberg and DSA strive to create: opportunities where people of all abilities can come together, challenge themselves, and share in experiences that build confidence and community. A huge thank you to everyone who came along and made the afternoon so special. It was a privilege to share the rink with you all, and to witness the courage, laughter, and joy that filled the arena. Core memories were definitely made yesterday, and we can’t wait to see what the next adventure holds.
