On Saturday, Canterbury families enjoyed an action-packed day at the 2025 Burnside Disability Sport Extravaganza. The annual event, held in collaboration with Parafed Canterbury and Burnside High School, brought together over 30 families from across the region for a day filled with activity, fun, and connection.

One of the most memorable parts of the day was the incredible range of sports and activities on offer all thoughtfully tailored to meet the varied needs of the participants. From team games to individual challenges, everyone had the chance to try something new and take part in a welcoming and inclusive environment. We’d like to give a massive thank you to the following sports providers for their energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to creating opportunities for all: Mainland Football, Boccia NZ, Canterbury Volleyball, Canterbury Hockey, Bowls Canterbury, Basketball NZ, Canterbury Cricket, Canterbury Golf, and the Graeme Dingle Foundation.

Events like this allow young people to explore new sports and spark new passions. As a follow-on from have-a-go days like this one, many of the sports providers involved are offering ongoing opportunities for disabled young people to get involved and stay active. These regular sessions help build confidence, friendships, and a sense of belonging—and we can’t wait to see them grow.

Lunchtime was a chance to relax and refuel, with Sidz Pigz serving up a delicious BBQ and Mug Shotz Coffee keeping everyone warm and caffeinated. Their generous support added a special touch to the day, giving families a moment to unwind and connect with one another.

The day simply wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of Burnside High School. The venue was perfect, and the Year 13 sport leaders were a huge help—encouraging participants, giving things a go themselves, and growing in confidence as the day progressed. Their support truly added to the positive atmosphere.

Seeing participants and their whānau challenge themselves, discover new skills, and reconnect with their community was a powerful reminder of why events like this matter. Your enthusiasm, positivity, and support of the Halberg Foundation made this day such a success.

We’re already looking forward to doing it all again at the 2026 Burnside Disability Sport Extravaganza!
