Every great sporting journey starts long before the medals, trophies and national titles.
it starts with the people behind the scenes. The volunteers who give their time, energy and passion to create opportunities for others to participate, develop and succeed through sport.
This year, we’re proud to introduce the Bunnings Community Sport Volunteer Award as part of the 64th ISPS Handa Halberg Awards, in partnership with Bunnings.
The new award will shine a light on the incredible volunteers who are the backbone of community sport across Aotearoa. From coaches and club administrators to organisers, fundraisers, officials and the many people who simply show up week after week to keep their sporting communities moving.
While the ISPS Handa Halberg Awards celebrate sporting excellence at the highest level, this award recognises the people who help make those sporting journeys possible in the first place.
It builds on Bunnings’ commitment to grassroots sport and their Coaching Legends programme, which has celebrated the impact of volunteer coaches in communities across Aotearoa.
Together, we’re excited to give community sport volunteers the recognition they deserve on one of New Zealand’s biggest sporting stages.
Nominations for the Bunnings Community Sport Volunteer Award is OFFICIALLY OPEN, nominations close 31st October 2026!

Keep an eye out for more as we officially launch this year’s Halberg Community Awards and shine a light on the incredible people making a difference in communities across Aotearoa.
