Participating in the Halberg Games has been a transformative journey for me, both as an athlete and as a person. The 2024 Halberg games, in particular, was a defining moment in my experience as I had the privilege of being the captain of the Waikato team. This role came with great responsibility – I was entrusted with supporting and guiding 30 athletes, the largest team we’ve ever had. It was a challenge, but also an honour to lead such an incredible group.

One of my favourite memories from the past ten years of competing is witnessing the incredible sportsmanship across the teams. Seeing athletes congratulate one another after every race holds a special place in my heart. While I have always valued good sportsmanship in my own sport, the Halberg Games introduced me to a whole new level of camaraderie. It also opened eyes to sports I never even knew existed in the Para space and, more importantly, connected me with lifelong friends.
Looking back, the Halberg Games have had a profound impact on my life. If it weren’t for this event, I truly don’t think I would be the person I am today. What initially motivated me to attend was the opportunity to compete against other athletes with disabilities across a wide range of sports. My journey began in 2015, and over the years, I’ve watched the Games evolve in the best way possible – becoming even more inclusive and finding new, accessible ways to ensure every athlete, regardless of their disability, can participate and thrive.

A standout moment for me was at the 2024 Halberg Games when our athlete relay team won the swimming race. The energy, the teamwork, and the sheer joy of that victory made it an unforgettable experience.
For any parents considering getting their child involved in the Halberg Games, my advice is simple – do it. It’s an incredible weekend filled with support, community, and opportunity. The environment is uplifting, and it provides young athletes with a space to grow, compete, and most importantly, have fun.
The Halberg Games means the world to me. It’s the one event year where I can reconnect with friends from different regions, meet new people, and watch young athletes experience the same joy and excitement that has shaped my own journey. Seeing their smiles is a reminder of what makes this event so special.
