For the Marshall-Kirkwood family, the first Halberg Games was more than just a weekend of sport – it was the beginning of a powerful connection. Attending that inaugural event introduced them to a community they didn’t know they needed. Surrounded by families on similar journeys, they discovered comfort, understanding, and lasting friendships.

The Games also opened doors to unexpected opportunities. It was there that Milly was first introduced to competitive athletics. What started as a chance to try new activities soon became a serious sporting pathway. Since that first experience, Milly has been nationally classified, represented New Zealand at the Oceania Athletics Championships, and now has her sights set on the international stage.

Over the years, Rob has watched the Halberg Games grow in scale and impact. He remembers a shift when the event moved to King’s College – everything felt more professional, polished, and powerful. The introduction of wider media coverage, increased communication, and a broader range of opportunities helped elevate the Games and expand their reach.

Among all the memories, a few moments stand out. Milly’s first-ever forward roll during a gymnastics activity was a major milestone, met with happy tears from her mum Paula. Another unforgettable highlight was when Milly received the Most Promising Athlete Award at the 2022 Regional Games in Palmerston North – an honour that marked the beginning of her high-performance journey.

As the Halberg Games celebrates a decade of inclusion and inspiration, Milly and Rob are a shining example of the impact it can have. From discovering community, to building confidence, to chasing dreams on thr world stage – their journey is a reminder of what’s possible when opportunity meets support.
