Hi, my name is John Sigurdsson, I am the Senior Manager South for the Halberg Foundation. I’ve been with Halberg for 17 years, and throughout that time, I’ve had the privilege of managing the Halberg Games from 2014 to 2024. I live in New Plymouth with my partner Tracey and our two boys, Gylfi and Oli.

When I’m not working, I enjoyed playing golf and running – sometimes combining the two in a sport called speed golf. I’m also a huge football fan and spend countless hours watching games. My passion for sports extends into my work, where I find deep fulfilment in creating opportunities for young disabled people to participate in sports and be active. The ability to influence the sports sector, making it more inclusive and accessible, is incredibly rewarding. The Halberg Games, in particular, have been a fantastic way to bring organisations and coaches along on this journey, fostering a vibrant, fun environment where young athletes can thrive.

The Games have evolved significantly over the years. in 2014, the event was known as the Junior Disability games, organised by the Independence Games Trust. Before that, it was called the Independence Games. Halberg stepped in to ensure its continuity, leveraging our network of advisers and Parafed partners to make the event sustainable. What started with just 40 athletes in 2014 has now grown to around 220 competitors, creating an incredible platform for young disabled athletes to shine.

Thinking back to my first Halberg Games as a staff member, I remember being tasked with managing the event in 2015, and it felt like we were starting from scratch. The transition from the previous format to the Halberg Games was a huge learning curve, and we had to be highly adaptive. That year, we introduced regional team t-shirts, which added so much colour and vibrancy to the venue. Despite the initial challenges, the event came together beautifully, and it was an incredible experience to lead such a dedicated team.

One of the most significant impacts of the Halberg Games is on personal growth – particularly in building confidence. The Games provide a safe space for young athletes to step outside their comfort zone, try new sports, and discover their potential. Beyond sports, the Games foster lifelong social connections among athletes and families, strengthening the community and creating lasting memories.

A new addition to the Games is the Halberg Mile, which has only been included in the past two events. While we previously had a 1500m race as part of the athletics program, we wanted to connect more directly to the legacy of Sir Murray Halberg. The Halberg Mile is open to all attendees, reinforcing the idea that families who stay active together are more likely to maintain healthy habits. While I’d love to claim a podium spot, I don’t think I’ll be catching the speedy Finn Tregurtha-Nairn anytime soon!

With so many incredible memories from the Games, it’s hard to pick a favourite. However, the 2024 event stands out. Despite the rain trying to dampen the fun, the Games community embraced the challenge – putting on jackets, smiling, and carrying on with enthusiasm. It was incredible to witness the resilience and spirit of everyone involved. I also love having my family onsite, sharing in the festivities and experiencing the magic of the games firsthand.

For anyone attending the Halberg Games for the first time – ask questions, get involved, and take it all in! The Games are more than just a sports event; they are a community where everyone supports each other. Come with an open mind, try new things, talk to others, and enjoy the experience. We’re here to ensure you have the best possible time.

Looking ahead to this year’s Games, I’m particularly excited about the addition of the disco and the chill zones schedule. These elements will provide great opportunities for connection outside of sports. That said, you won’t catch me on the dance floor!

As we celebrate 10 years of the Halberg Games, I’m incredibly proud of how far we’ve come and excited for what lies ahead! here’s to another decade of growth, inclusion, and unforgettable moments!
